Wonderful inspiration for all travellers

The Man in Seat 61 gives an authoritative yet friendly rundown on the whys' and wherefores' of European rail travel. In succinct and well written sections you can find out everything from how to travel with your bike to how to get to Prague (I fancy the overnight train from Cologne myself)

It is inspiring in helping you to realise how much easier and pleasurable rail travel is, and once you have got your head around the anachronisms of some of the European websites the world (or Europe at least) is your oyster.

We are using the book to help plan a family summer trip to Italy, as well as weekends away. Coupled to the Thomas Cook rail map I cannot see any need to fly anywhere in Europe again.

Mark Smith is the man

I have been using the seat61 website since 2002 and it has helped me plan loads of fab train trips - to Budapest, Berlin, Granada, Lisbon, Rome and others. Now the book means I can continue planning from the comfort of my Saturday morning lie in, dreaming the morning away! Not just Seat 61 - he deserves a seat in the House of Lords!

Full of good ideas

Lots of ideas on how to take trains and get to places. Have started to use it for travels, and am now taking much more civilised trips..... with the added bonus that you have no airport hassles, travel greener, take as much whisky and toothpaste as you like, and see the countryside! Read it and be inspired. It can work out just as cheap as air travel!

Essential and Inspirational

Absolutely everything you need to know about travelling by train in Europe - one of the most rewarding and under-rated experiences you can ever hope to have. Leave the budget airlines in the sky, pack an inter-rail pass, a Thomas Cook rail map, and a copy of Mark Smith's book; then climb aboard to explore a continent and its people on the rails.
