Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com A pleasure to watch | Customer Rating: | | This is the first DVD that i have watched for a long time that is not needlessly violent (that includes Disney!)and is simply a pleasure to watch. If you liked the books you will love this as it remains faithful to the text and brings the books to life. | Fabulous | Customer Rating: | This is simply fabulous. The film achieves something that rarely happens - not only does the film remain true to the feel of the books, it actually adds something too.... it has wonderful humour and pathos, the characters are great (Jill Scott is perfect as the lead role) and the filming and scenery is wonderful....... some might find it all a little too 'positive', but positivity is a rare and valuable commodity, particularly in the media, and I for one am not going to knock that.
What a loss for all of us that Minghella passed away after making this. | An Oustanding Production | Customer Rating: | Immediately after watching the film premiere on the BBC back in March 2008, I knew that this would be a film for keeps and I've been waiting for the DVD release so that I can watch the film again. It's brilliant.
The film was released as the first in a series to be continued by the BBC, with the filming for the remainder of the episodes due to begin in the summer ('08). It was so sad to hear of director Anthony Minghella's death just a few days before the film was first shown on the BBC. The film is a fitting last testament to his brilliant career and I hope that they can pull off the rest of the episodes as well as this one, without Minghella's direction.
Minghella and the cast really bring to life Alexander McCall Smith's rich and humorous novels of Botswana. The on-location filming is spot on, the scenery beautiful, stark and vivid, the characters warm and superbly cast (Jill Scott is a perfect Mma Ramotswe), and there is a charm to the film which makes you want to laugh, cry and experience Gabarone and Botswana with Mma Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi and the rest of the delightful characters. Tinged with deeper meaning, and some of the darker traditional practices, such as the witchcraft trading in human body parts still to be found underground in parts of the continent, it is the beauty and spirit of Africa that really shines through this film. Its humour and good nature make it a film suitable for the whole family to watch. | A beautiful film, from a fabulous book | Customer Rating: | | One of the most beautiful (cinematically and emotionally) moving films of 2008. Everyone should watch it, for pure entertainment and for a tiny insight into another world. A real joy! | Brilliantly done! | Customer Rating: | Having read all the books and seen the film on TV, I couldn't wait for this to come out on DVD. Perfect casting! Just how I imagined them! It was so sad that Director Anthony Minghella didn't live to see his excellent work broadcast on television last Easter. I only hope someone else will continue his good example, and turn more of Alexander McCall Smith's works into films of this calibre, as a tribute to his memory. The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency [2008] |
