This 340 page paperbook is packed with 5000 'idioms, metaphorical phrases, similes, sayings and proverbs from the whole of the English speaking world'.

All the entries are grouped under headwords which are listed alphabetically e.g. the word 'book' heads 13 sayings whereas the word 'face' heads 16 sayings.

There is also an index system which lists sayings under themes such as action, age, ambition and so on.

For example, under ambition (in the index) are listed 12 sayings.

One of these is "think big" and another is "raise your sights". One word is highlighted so that one can then look up the saying in the main body of the text.

Think big means be ambitious (informal).

Raise your sights means (to) become more ambitious; increase your expectations.

Most well-read native English speakers will know the majority of these sayings but this book can still be useful for looking up the more obscure ones or those used in different parts of the English speaking world. Foreigners who have already learned the basics of English may find this book useful too.
